Donatas Banionis, the lead actor in the 1972 Russian sci-fi film Solaris, has died aged 90.6163767_gal (1)
He had reportedly suffered a stroke and died in hospital according to the Lithuanian Filmmakers Union.

In the Andrei Tarkovksy film he portrayed Kris Kelvin, the psychologist who embarks on an interstellar journey to a space station.  Solaris received two awards at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival (Grand Prize of the Jury, FIPRESCI prize) as well a nomination in the Palme d’Or category.

He was the last surviving male cast-member of the film.
