NY Daily News ‘Most Popular Motion Picture Actress’ in 1929.

In 1929, the New York Daily News published the results of their ‘annual movie popularity contest’ for actresses of that year.  The results were published midway through 1929, and a reproduced in this article.

Below are the top ten

1/ Clara Bow (18,063 votes)
(three films released that year: The Wild Party, Dangerous Curves, The Saturday Night Kid)
 
2/ Greta Garbo (14,552 votes)
 (three films released that year: Wild Orchids, The Single Standard, The Kiss)
 
3/  Joan Crawford (5,757 votes)
(four films released that year:  The Duke Steps Out, Our Modern Maidens,  The Hollywood Revue of 1929, Untamed)
 
4/ Vilma Banksy (3,553 votes)
(one film released that year: This is Heaven)
 
5/ Nancy Carroll (3,486 votes)
(six films released that year: The Wolf of Wall Street,  Sin Sister, Close Harmony,  The Dance of Life, Illusion, Sweetie)
 
6/ Mary Pickford (3,168 votes)
(two films released that year: Coquette, The Taming of the Shrew)
 
7/ Dolores Del Rio (3,031 votes)
(one film released that year: Evangeline.)
 
8/ Dolores Costello (3,011 votes)
(starred in five films during the year – all of except one are now lost: The Redeeming Sin, Glad Rag Doll, Madonna of Avenue A, Hearts in Exile, The Show of Shows (partially survived)
